My mother is a journalist and editor of a newspaper, so she sees her name in print multiple times a week, and has for thirty or so years. Even still, her mother pasted every one of her articles into scrapbooks until the day she died twelve years ago. My mother was one of those super-photographed children, an only child with artistic parents thrilled with their accomplishment in making her. My mother doesn’t say it often, but I know I remind her of her mother – creative but disciplined, tidy and fastidious.
My mother – she who still wears bell bottoms and tie dye, she who is currently thrilled to bits with her new Bob Dylan cell phone ringtone (“Blowin’ in the Wind” – though I advocated for “Masters of War,” but it wasn’t offered. How insane/awesome would “And I hope that you die, and your death will come soon…” be as a ringtone? OH! Speaking of ring tones, my sweetheart custom-made me my dream ring tone: “We’re Bikini Kill, and we want – REVOLUTION GRRRL STYLE NOW!!…Hey girlfriend! I’ve got a proposition goes something like this, dare you to do want you want…” - then it goes to voicemail.), she who went to Woodstock on a press pass – is not fastidious, and I secretly think she is suspicious of people who are.
This has nothing to do with the fact that I too have an obsessive need to document.
So, now that I figure it has gone off the shelves and I’m not taking their money away, I will offer you a .pdf of an article in Veg News magazine about vegan babymamas and daddies and vegan childfreeers by the lovely Marla Rose. I am quoted in the article and for the very first time ever (as opposed to some articles I could mention) I sound so wise and smart that I have to point it out.
And in the interest of doing my Green Party duty, I will point you to a letter to the editor I have in this week’s New Paltz Times (you have to scroll down a bit) in which, as the incoming chairwoman of the illustrious New Paltz Green Party, I feel the need to publicly defend gay marriage even although I personally think all marriage is kind of silly.
Scrapbooking is over. Hey, even Alison Bechdel, she of the beautiful hands* and gorgeous works that flow from them, indulges in a little scrapbooking sometimes, why can’t I?
*I’m not sure exactly why, but I seem to spend a lot of time thinking about Alison Bechdel’s hands and how much I like them. I was super excited when someone mentioned this very thing her blog the other day.
